Process Group Therapy
Many Austin therapists offer process group therapy. Process groups generally consist of eight to ten members who want to make changes to improve their personal lives and relationships. The dynamics of the group often bring out behaviors that participants once used to cope with stresses within their family of origin. As the group progresses and members begin to feel safe enough to communicate openly, they discover that some of these behaviors are no longer adaptive.
Members also may develop an awareness of how all humans unconsciously hide certain emotional parts of themselves in order to avoid painful feelings. As feelings of trust and support develop within the group, they begin to recognize and acknowledge these feelings and replace them with conscious and more authentic responses. When more genuine sharing takes place, members begin to shed old patterns of behavior and become more fully who they are. It's no surprise that group therapy has been shown to be as effective, or even more so, than individual therapy.Austin Psychoeducational Groups
Because psychoeducational groups provide participants information about a certain topic, these groups differ from those that provide therapy. Austin therapists offer psychoeducational groups addressing a variety of topics such as eating disorders, anxiety, divorce, careers, stress-reduction, and parenting. While process groups are often ongoing, psychoeducational groups often meet for a limited number of sessions.
For a list of both psychoeducational and process groups, visit Austin therapists' postings at www.austingroups.org.
