Although all forms of therapy support people to identify and work on areas that are creating difficulties in their lives, each has a different focus.

 

Family therapy, which usually involves some sessions with all family members, views the family as a system and helps family members learn effective communication and problem-solving skills.

Therapy for children and adolescents focuses on empowering clients to develop a healthy sense of self and to learn about and regulate emotions. Sessions for children and adolescents are generally one-on-one but parents and/or caregivers are sometimes included. The counseling focus in group therapy may be psychotherapeutic or psychoeducational. Psychotherapeutic groups are small groups in which participants are encouraged to speak honestly in discussions guided by one or two therapists. Couples therapy helps couples understand how differences in their personalities and backgrounds affect how they make decisions and solve problems. They learn to value these differences and work through conflicts respectfully.
