Am I Addicted?

Am I Addicted?
John Lindsey

An addict? Me? Who can help?

Multiple forms of addiction exist in our society. The most common addictions include drug and alcohol, gambling, sex, and internet pornography.

While these are all different categories of addiction, they are united by the common symptom of compulsive, repeated behaviors pursued despite knowledge of negative and potentially harmful outcomes. Addictions wreak havoc on the personal life of the individual addict, as well as those people close to him or her. Sometimes an addicted person is in complete denial, or he or she may be aware of the problem, but unable to address or control the compulsion. As an addiction grows stronger, other areas of the person's life may begin to suffer including job performance, family life, health, and finances.

Professional counselors serve as valuable tool in aiding self-admitted individuals to understand and resolve their addiction. Addiction counselors can also assist family and friends in conducting interventions for individuals in denial about their addiction problem. If you are not sure if you are suffering from addiction, try reviewing the following list of indications that you might benefit from visiting an addiction counselor:
